This time we'll switch up the trailhead and circle Samual Taylor park and part of Geronmio valley and hit Barnabe Peak and the Inkwells and parts of Point Reyes park and those redwood trees. Or something like that.

This will be a 13-18 mile hike. We will also do a shorted hike that will include a meditation/Qi gong on sunday, possibly...or the follwing week.
Last month we hiked into Muir Woods for the moonlight hike - which was beautiful but I neglected the fact that the trees are so thick and luch that the moonlight doesnt cut thorugh.

So this time well make it a place with a view - the De Anza discovery site. NO. 394 SITE OF THE DISCOVERY OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY - On October 31,1769, Captain Gaspar de Portolá was camped by the creek at the south of this valley when scouting parties brought news of a body of water to the east. On November 4, the expedition advanced. Turning inland, the party climbed to the summit of Sweeney Ridge and beheld the Bay of San Francisco for the first time.
Location: Sweeney Ridge, from Hwy 1 take Fassler Ave, then trail to site in Pacifica, plaque located SE corner of Crespi Dr and State Hwy 1, Pacifica
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places: NPS-68000022

We can meet at the parking lot at the start of sweeney ridge at the end of sneath lane or at the parking lot at skyline college or at the one in pacifica -- or at the discovery site - I have been to them all, and its to be figured:

Did you remember the amazing hike sunday? Its the revisit of the Mckennon trail up Bolinas Ridge, I have a better idea of wherethe tail is, so Lets do it one more time. Last year on this date we lost a hiker....

This was written before we know how mad it was:

Hike this weekend? If you're strong enough.

That Murietta Falls hike was the most difficult day hike ive done. Lets continue.

I was thinking of something very special - nothing steep like this past week (3000 foot gain and not as steep) -- a few secretive trails heading up and down Bolinas ridge surrounding the Audubon Canyon Ranch. Funky animals and plants. There may still be Indians hanging out there.

There are no references to this hike that I can find.

14-16 miles.

3100-foot elevation gain.

So berry, berry early.

The egrets will be nesting.

Starting from Mckennan Gulch Trailhead on Rt1 just North of Stinson Beach - 1700 feet up to the Coastal trail, turn left to intersect Bolinas-Fairfax Road. (3.6 Miles)

(OR start at Larsens Lodge Site on Bolinas Fairfax Rd. if we are all suckers, cutting 7 miles off the hike and making it a bunny hike) Descend 1300 feet into Audubon canyon ranch. Range around, and then head back up the 1300 feet. (3-5 miles)

At Larsen's lodge we head back toward to trailhead, but go past the McKesson Gulch trail (1.9 miles) if possible, to pass Cook's Bench and then to Willow Camp trail (1.1 miles) we see astounding views here (3 miles total)

...A 2.5-mile decent back to the trailhead. (4.4 miles) a 1800 foot decent.

The trailhead:

McKennan Gulch: Take Hwy1 west from Hwy 101. Drive through Stinson Beach town and go 1.5 miles north on Hwy 1 with Bolinas Lagoon on your left. After about 1/2 mile past the Stinson School, start looking for an orange cone by a grove of pine trees on the right (orange cone not available for our hike). Pull in and park.

OR, sneak into the Audubon Ranch for stealing glances at teh birds:

Hike Sunday July 16! Not-so-Mad Bolinas Ridge not-so-scramble (changed date)

MAP: www.nps.gov/pore/pdf/map...th_060101.pdf

I wanna hike this Saturday. And I do think Bolinas Ridge. Be at the trailhead at
11 am. Who wants to come? 8 or 10 miles. Carpool?

Start at the Intersection of Bolinas Fairfax Road and RidgeCrest BLVD, just up from the Larsens Lodge Site on Bolinas Fairfax Rd. Descend 1300 feet into Audubon canyon ranch. Range around, and then head back up the 1300 feet. (3-5
miles) The trail may be closed - do not dispair, we will go another way.

ONE WAY:

At Larsen's lodge we head back toward to trailhead, but go past the imfamous McKesson
Gulch trail (1.9 miles) if possible, to pass Cook's Bench and then to Willow
Camp trail (1.1 miles) we see astounding views here (3 miles total)..and short stroll to Cataract Falls.

THE NEW WAY: Take teh Bolinas Ridge Trail North to McCurdy (3.3) or Randall (4.4) on a level ridge. Then down 1300 feet to the Oema Valley Trail. Lets of neat-o stuff around here. And back up.

The plan is to meet at the Sanborn park enterance at 11 AM. The one on Sanborn raod, off HWY 9, just up from Saratoga. Take the Sanborn trail to the skyline trail to Castle Rock State park - by crossing Skyline blvd. We could also visit indain and summit rocks just out of the way. We can immediatly visit castle rock and attempt a climb, or continue taking the Saratoga Gap trail to the falls, and all the way the the camping area - amnd taking the ridge trail back to see goat rock (which looks like the face of Nietzsche). This takes us back to castle rock and the return journey. Look like 11 miles. Its is the summit of the santa crux mtns. Its been cold as hell, so I imagine it will be cold as hell. prepare yourself.
And others from the same hike:
Sibley MaZes Dec. 30 Full (nearly) Moon Hike

Anybody into a midnight full moon hike the evening before New Year's eve? Destination would be the Oakland Hills, Sibley park, inside a volcano cone, walking the mazes. Yes mazes, labyrinths - well, maybe not quite Minotaurian in scope, but this is Oakland after all. We will need to find them in the dark, but they are there:

Start around 8PM.

"Spooky and Spiritual"
No one knows who carved mysterious mazes in East Bay park. You could call it the Volcanic Witch Project. High in the East Bay hills, above Oakland's urban hum and deep in the ruins of a volcano that spewed its top 10 million years ago, five mysterious mazes are carved into the earth and lined with stones. Some people call them spooky. Others call them mystically profound and leave letters to spirits in the shrines at their centers.
Few dare make fun of them -- they are afraid to.
``Witches and warlocks built them, that's what people around here say, and I never had any reason to doubt them,'' said Sara Lagasse, who lives at the entrance to the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, where the mazes lie like perpetually posed questions. ``It's kind of fun to go up there to see what people leave . . . but then . . .''
Lagasse stopped abruptly, glanced furtively up the trail toward the windswept hillsides. ``You know, they are a little scary if you think about it,'' she said quietly. ``I mean, who put them there and why?'' Good question.
The people who come to walk the mazes don't know. The East Bay Regional Park District doesn't know, at least not fully. But if you stand in the whistling breeze, with only the cries of red-tailed hawks wheeling overhead to break the silence, it is easy to see why someone would try to turn this park into a supernatural retreat. It is spooky, and contemplative, in a desolately attractive way -- and the twisting, rocky oddities seem to fit in like the lava-strewn soil itself.
The mazes are classic labyrinths, the kind meant for people to walk through slowly and come out feeling soulfully refreshed at the end. One was crafted in 1989 by Montclair sculptor and psychic Helena Mazzariello as ``a gift to the world'' -- but the others are a total mystery.
That's just fine with the folks who visit them. Not knowing feeds the mystique. ``I never knew what they were about, or even ran into anyone else who knew anything about them,'' said Megan Williams, 21, who bicycled 15 miles from Berkeley one recent afternoon to visit a maze, something she has done several times since 1993. ``All I know is they are beautiful, amazing, spiritual.
``I don't care if witches or Martians or whoever did them,'' she said after dropping a marble and a chunk of sandstone into the maze's middle and meditating there several minutes. ``Doesn't matter. ``Here, you're a million miles away from everything, it's wild, it's open . . . it's just . . . it's the most spiritual place on Earth to me,'' Williams said. ``I'm not sure why. It just is.''
Sibley's mazes -- all carved into the bottom of sheltered canyons -- are 50 to 100 feet across, as much as two feet high and based on medieval outlines used by mystics, Christians and New Agers alike.
The design is simple: A single pathway coiling toward the center is etched into the dirt and lined with rocks, and a stone pile, arranged like a crude shrine, waits in the middle. Three of the mazes are round, one is heart-shaped, and the fifth is actually a cluster of a half-dozen tiny ones. Some in the cluster are whimsical, such as one crafted into a smiley face, and others are ciphers.
The builders clearly took their cue from the ancients who started all things labyrinthine in Crete 3,200 years ago; check out Cretan coins in an encyclopedia, and you'll see they match. The same model was replicated from France's Chartres Cathedral in 1220 -- monks crawled it to purge themselves of demons -- to San Francisco's Grace Cathedral in 1992.
Nobody has been witnessed crawling at the Sibley mazes, but people are often seen strolling the winding pathways and kneeling to leave personal items in the center -- some of it very personal.
A spot check of the shrines last week revealed two sticks whittled into beaded magic wands, square rocks scratched with bizarre symbols, animal bones, BART and circus tickets, melted and unmelted candles and a bone pipe stuffed with feathers. There were also rings and bracelets, $5 in international coins and bills, dozens of shiny, multicolored stones, and two fake diamonds.
And then there were the half-dozen love letters and notes, left as though the shrines somehow doubled as mailboxes to gods unknown.
``Spirits hear my pleas for my massage practice to double, instantly . . . steadily so I can pay for a nice, safe home,'' beseeched a letter at the center of the biggest maze, a circular sprawl in an old quarry pit at the foot of a 300-foot cliff. ``O Great Ones, send fire down to destroy the one who troubles me,'' demanded another note at the slightly smaller, heart-shaped maze in another quarry pit a half-mile away. The note was scrawled on red- splattered cloth and stuck beneath a blotch of melted wax.
No rules are posted, so people guess at what they might be. There's a lot of talk about how it's probably important not to offend the spirits, or sprites, or gods, or whatever.
``I have no idea what you're supposed to do, but I get the impression you're not supposed to step over the maze walls,'' Laura Hinton of Martinez said after threading through one for the first time. ``I was surprised -- it was soothing. I've had a migraine for two days, and as soon as I walked out of the maze it disappeared. So I guess I followed the rule correctly, whatever it is.'' As far as park workers can recall, the mazes have been in Sibley for at least a decade. Nobody -- not even Mazzariello -- knows who tends them or why so many are there.
Several mazes also have little stone-pile markers or iron sculptures positioned dozens of feet from their edges, eerily evoking those in the film ``The Blair Witch Project.''
``I've been coming out here a long time and I've seen people do some pretty freaky stuff in these mazes,'' said Peter Gillette, 40, of Berkeley, as he walked toward one of the labyrinths. ``I've seen strange birthday parties, solstice ceremonies in the moonlight, and once there was a bunch of people in one of them waving their hands in the air and making mighty sounds --you know, gobbledygook. Weird stuff.''
Whether it was good or bad witches, artistic aliens, mainstream religious types or chakra-loving New Agers who cut the mazes, it's clear they picked their spot carefully.
Sibley is a cluster of historic lava vents, including the Round Top volcano, which bubbled up 10 million years ago when Moraga was beachfront to a huge inland sea. Being the nexus of a bunch of formerly hot holes pointing to the planet's core, it's the sort of place psychics say has a lot of cosmic power.
From the park entrance, it is a mile-long hike through sun-baked, laurel-tree studded hills to the most obvious maze, Mazzariello's big one at the bottom of the 300-foot cliff. You have to wind another mile through similar trails to find the others; two are easy to spot but the remaining two are tricky.
Mazzariello said she built the maze ``because it was such a beautiful spot and it felt like it had an energy to it of goodness and peace.''
That spirit has even managed to grow on park honchos. Officially, the mazes should have never been allowed: It's against park rules to mess with the landscape, let alone make things there. But over the years the mazes became stony proof that rules are meant to be bent now and then.
``A lot of people like them,'' said Ned MacKay, district spokesman. ``We don't encourage building structures in our parks, and we don't know who's doing all of them, but they're not harming anything. So we leave them.
``It would be nice to know who built them, though,'' he said. ``They're a real mystery.''

Each hsunday this winter we will havea winter hike. this weekend, were doing the dunday hike on saturday night, in the mountian home area.

Next sunday the 10th is still opne, any ideas. well go rain or shine.

last week's hike.......

it was rain. it was cold. it was blowing wind. it was reality. it was beautiful. We went to Muir's Fern woods and hiked up to the mountain home. What I and everyone felt was Beauty and a slight terror! The trudging troglodytes cursed as much as the chattering chuds were brisk walkers with hoods pressed hard over each owns head and didn't see the post reading to turn left. I stood on top of the mountain with rain pouring down my checks until my face was numb. This, my second winter storm I've been caught in – somewhat unexpectedly. The loudness of it all took hold of me standing alone under the darkening grimace of a sky. It was just the rain. It was blinding, and that blinding was then muffled by the hoods. The other storm, just before the storm, I found it trumpeted its silence as inside a cathedral. Those granite stones exploding miles on every side of me, the night was quiet, with no wind, insects or water. Perfectly still.
StealthLight® sewn-in waistbelt and yoke-style harness are lightweight and low profile
Canted bottom prevents sagging and positions pack's load higher on your back for ideal carrying
Dual ice axe and trekking pole loops with six additional compression lash straps and side bungee cord allow you to carry various technical tools

Introducing our new Peak UL line--the lightest, strongest trekking poles out there! Made for minimalist backpackers and adventure racers.
Small-diameter carbon fiber creates ultralight poles that damp vibration and retain strength over a wide temperature range
Extra-strong DuoLocks™ provide a big boost in performance
DuoLocks--internal locking mechanisms--apply a wide area of pressure against pole walls to lock in length adjustment
DuoLocks showed 50% more holding power than other locking mechanisms during REI lab tests
DuoLock's reliability enhances stability, eases length adjustments and offers a compelling reason to upgrade to Peak UL poles

Everybody,

The training is continuing. Last Sunday we hiked 15.2 miles from Bolinas ridge in the Mt Tam Watershed through Olema valley in the GGNRA to Olema trail on the Pt Reyes National Seashore.

And back - that was the killer.

This weekend. Another big hike. All day - Id like to start earlier this time.

I’ve two options to offer you.

Option Orangutan: A ramble over Mt Diablo from Curry through the caves area to the peak and back - if that’s not enough lets bag the second peak. Lets look and see what we can do.

Option Dracula: A forested journey though Big Basin. Id liketo start at the sea - over Berry creek falls - up to the summit, and back. Many trails to ramble through here.

Total could be 12-16 miles. Elevation gains up to 2000 feet at big basin and 3000 feet in Mt Diablo.

Ok, sing up here.

ONE WAY:
past week (3000 foot gain and not as steep) -- a few secretive trails
heading up and down bolinas ridge surrounding the Audubon Canyon
out there.
14-16 miles.
then to Willow Camp trail (1.1 miles) we see astonding views here (3

...a 2.5 mile decent back to the trailhead. (4.4 miles) a 1800 foot
the trailhead:
Beach town and go 1.5 miles north on Hwy 1 with Bolinas Lagoon on your

3. Uvas Canyon Park?s Falls

Uvas Canyon County Park is a little slice of waterfall heaven on the
east side
of the Santa Cruz Mountains. You can walk the one-mile Waterfall Loop
Trail and
see Black Rock Falls and several smaller cascades on Swanson Creek, or
you can
add on an eighth-mile side trip to see Basin Falls and Upper Falls. If
you?re
in the mood to stretch your legs, you can make a larger loop out to Alec
Canyon,
then take the uphill trail a half-mile to Triple Falls on Alec Creek.

Start your trip at the Black Oak Group Picnic Area. Head straight (not
uphill on
the dirt road) to connect to the short loop trail in the canyon. Cross
Swanson
Creek on a footbridge, then bear right at the fork, and head directly
for Black
Rock Falls, a quarter-mile away. You?ll find it on your right, pouring
30 feet
down a side canyon over ?you guessed it?black rock.

Take a few pictures, then continue back in the canyon, heading for Basin
Falls
(20 feet tall, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and making a lovely
S-curve at
it carves its way downcanyon) and Upper Falls (15 feet tall with a
fallen tree
in front).

In the rainy season, water pours down Uvas Canyon?s walls from all
sides,
creating a happy noise. The canyon is filled with oaks, laurels, and
Douglas
firs, all thriving in the wet environment around Swanson Creek.

To see Triple Falls, continue up Swanson Creek and follow the winding
Contour
Trail to Alec Canyon. This adds 2.5 miles and a brief ascent to your
mileage.
Where Contour Trail meets up with Alec Canyon Fire Road, turn right and
hike a
half-mile. (You?ll pass Manzanita Point, which offers far-reaching views
on
clear days.) Turn right again on the spur trail to Triple Falls. True to
its
name, Triple Falls is a series of three cascades, totalling 40 feet in
height.

Trip notes: For more information contact Uvas Canyon County Park,
408/779-9232.
